With AudioNoise you can take advantage of the so-called
masking effect: by presenting a low level broadband noise
to the ear it is possible to effectively block other (possibly
disturbing) sounds. The point is that a broaband noise is
much less disturbing than, say, a high pitched tone, because
the brain doesn't interpret it as important information.
In fact, after listening to broadband noise for 10-15 minutes
you won't even notice it any more unless it is fairly loud.

The AudioNoise software can generate different
types of noise: white, pink, and so-called physiological
noise. The latter is adapted to the human ear and stimulates
the inner ear (the cochlea) uniformly over its entire length.
Each noise type can be restricted to an arbitrary frequency
range.
In
order to make the noise even more relaxing, you can apply
the "surf effect" to it. This means a waxing
and waning of the noise similar to an ocean surf. With
AudioNoise you can choose the strength and period (timescale)
of that effect.
AudioNoise can play the noise on your computer
or save it to a sound file which can be burned to an audio
CD.
In addition, AudioNoise contains a special
tool for tinnitus diagnosis: the Tinnitus Finder. This is
a tone generator with a slider to set pitch. Together with
AudioNoise's volume control patients can match the AudioNoise-tone
to their tinnitus in order to estimate the tinnitus frequency
and to give others an impression of their tinnitus level.
You can download and use AudioNoise without
registration as long as you want. The free version of AudioNoise
is fully functional except that the duration of play-back
and sound files is restricted to 30 minutes. After that it
is necessary to restart play-back. In the registered version
there is no such limitation.
